MFA THESIS SPRING 2019 / SOCIAL DESIGN
An AI based community service integrating
refugees and immigrants into a new country
”Empathy begins with understanding life from another person’s perspective. Nobody has an objective experience of reality. It’s all through our own individual prisms” is a saying by Sterling K. Brown. We can all agree, that this modern time is a special point in time for the world’s timeline. Technological advancement has made it possible to communicate across borders, and travel almost anywhere in an instant. With displacement, different people with different backgrounds are forced or choose to co-reside in ways that we have never seen before. The effect, as with any type of transformation, has two sides of the coin. What if you would end up living in a country where you had little knowledge of the spoken target languages? What would it take for you to learn how to communicate, and adapt to the host culture? What if you on top of this had very few ways of transferring your past knowledge, documents, and credits to prove what you have done before? What is there were multiple systemic barriers to break through, and pre-proposed disbeliefs towards you? Thousands of newcomers, such as refugees, in countries like Sweden, are experiencing these issues every single day. Social integration is something that takes a lot of time, with a lot of ingredients, but no perfect recipe to follow. To start, this MFA thesis started with a motivation to find strategies for how the situation of social integration could be improved, approaching it through social design.
